Atletico Nacional started their Copa Sudamericana campaign in style as they defeated Inti Gas 1-0 in the first leg of their first stage match in Peru on Tuesday.

Sherman Cardenas netted the winning goal nine minutes into the second half, giving Juan Carlos Osorio's Colombian giants an important away goal ahead of the 6 August return in Medellin.

Another Colombian team were also celebrating against Peruvian opponents, as two goals by Jorge Aguirre helped Itagui see off visitors Juan Aurich.

Diego Cabrera opened the scoring in the 29th minute after Juan Aurich goalkeeper Erik Delgado failed to hold a long-range shot.

Aguirre doubled the lead 10 minutes later with a penalty and just before the interval the same player chested down a Luis Quinonez cross to give Itagui a comfortable lead ahead of the second leg on 7 August in Chiclayo.

2011 Sudamericana champions Universidad de Chile took an early lead in their match with Real Potosi but slipped to a 3-1 defeat in Bolivia.

Rodrigo Rojas put Universidad ahead in the eighth minute but goals from Ivan Cerda (25), Maximiliano Andrada (58) and Nicolas Bubas (64) turned things around.

Universidad coach Marco-Antonio Figueroa told reporters afterwards: "I don't think this situation is critical, but we have players in very low form. I think we can turn this around in Santiago."

In Ecuador, Liga de Loja defeated Venezuela's Deportivo Lara 2-0 with goals from Fabio Renato (29) and Dixon Arroyo (61) either side of Lara defender Jesus Alvarez's red card.

Liga defender Jimmy Bermudez will also miss the return next Tuesday - he was dismissed two minutes from the end.

In Venezuela, Colombia's La Equidad won 1-0 over Trujillanos thanks to Stalin Motta's goal in the first minute of the second half.

In Paraguay, hosts Nacional played out a goalless draw with Bolivian giants The Strongest - Nacional midfielder Marcos Riveros saw his 78th-minute penalty strike the woodwork.
