Injured Jackson Bird Heading Home

Jackson Bird is returning home due to a lower back injury

Fast bowler Jackson Bird has become the latest Australian fast bowler to succumb to injury and will return home with a lower back problem.

He made his Ashes Test debut in the fourth match at Chester-le-Street, where he took two wickets but was left out of the final match at The Oval.

He left the field during England's second innings and has been unable to shake off back pain.

"Jackson has had low back pain over the past week of The Ashes tour and will return to Australia today to begin the process of investigating the source of the pain and rehabilitation," Cricket Australia (CA) team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris confirmed.

In three Tests to date, Bird has taken 13 wickets at an average of 23.30 with a best of four for 41 and he was not included in Australia's limited overs squad for the final part of the tour of the British Isles.

Earlier this year, he was forced to leave Australia's tour of India early, also struggling with a back injury.

Bird's departure is the latest in a string of misfortune to hit the Australian bowlers. James Pattinson and Ashton Agar have already left the tour and Patrick Cummins suffered an injury in South Africa which is expected to rule him out for the 2013-14 season.

They trail England 3-0 in the series.
