Shehzad Stars Again As Pakistan Wrap Up Series

Ahmed Shehzad hit an unbeaten 98 as Pakistan comfortably beat Zimbabwe.

Pakistan 179-1 (Shehzad 98no) beat
Zimbabwe 160-6 (H Masakadza 41) by 19 runs
Second Twenty20 International, Harare
Scorecard

A career-best 98 not out from Ahmed Shehzad set up Pakistan’s 19-run over Zimbabwe in the second and final T20 International at Harare Sports Club. They therefore wrap up the series 2-0, with the two sides now set to contest three ODIs in Harare, the first of which is on Tuesday.

Shehzad dominated the Pakistan innings of 179 for one, although Nasir Jamshed did the bulk of the early scoring. He made 23 off 17 balls but was caught off Shingi Masakadza in the sixth over to give the home side what would be their first and only success with the ball.

Shehzad made 70 in the first match on Friday, but batted throughout the innings today, ending just two short of what would have been his maiden century. He added an unbroken 143 in 86 balls with his captain Mohammad Hafeez for the second-wicket and hit six maximums. Hafeez ended on 54 off 40 balls, having hit three fours and two sixes.

Most of the Zimbabwe bowlers came in for significant punishment, with the recalled Tinashe Panyangara arguably the pick, conceding only 29 runs from his four overs. He was the only change to Zimbabwe’s side from yesterday, playing in place of Tendai Chatara, while Pakistan made two changes, resting Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Irfan and picking Zulfiqar Babar and Asad Ali.

Zimbabwe’s run chase followed a similar pattern to yesterday’s. Vusi Sibanda and Hamilton Masakadza got them off to a solid start with an opening stand of 50 in 44 balls. However, they again struggled to keep up with the required run rate and, when Masakadza fell to Hafeez in the 14th over for a well-made 41 off 32 balls, the game was probably over.

Sean Williams and Elton Chigumbura did their best. The former hit 25 off 16 balls before being stumped off Babar, while Chigumbura finished on 35 off 19 balls and clubbed a brace of sixes. Malcolm Waller also made a sparky 20 off 14 balls, but it wasn’t to be enough and Zimbabwe ended on 160 for six.

Pakistan’s bowling attack was led by their spinners. Hafeez picked up three for 30, while Babar took two for 21 from his four overs.

England Level Ashes Series At Hove

England celebrate the dismissal of Australian opener Rachael Haynes

England 256-6 (Edwards 53) beat
Australia 205 (Cameron 81) by 51 runs
Second Women's Ashes One-Day International

England beat Australia by 51 runs in the second Women's Ashes One-Day International at Hove to draw level in the series at four points apiece.

Once again, Charlotte Edwards led from the front, top scoring with 53 as England put up a score of 256 for six, which they were able to defend relatively comfortably.

Jess Cameron made 81 for Australia before they were bowled out in the 49th over for 205.

England chose to open with Edwards and Heather Knight and the pair set the tone with a partnership of 45 in seven overs.

Knight fell for 31 in 26 balls and after her early charge, Sarah Taylor (32), Lydia Greenway (46), Arran Brindle (42) and Natalie Sciver (20 not out) added useful runs to support Edwards.

She made 53 in 84 balls with five fours and although Sarah Coyte and Jess Jonassen grabbed a brace of wickets England had reached a score that was always going to challenge Australia.

Their task was added to when both openers Rachael Haynes and Meg Lanning fell without scoring to Katherine Brunt and Anya Shrubsole respectively.

Cameron, whose 81 came in 108 balls and included 10 fours, then helped Australia stay in the game with the aid of Jodie Fields (20) and Alex Blackwell (23) before a critical phase of the game saw England snaffle three wickets for 13 runs.

Blackwell was caught and bowled by Jenny Gunn, Ellyse Perry was run out by Greenway and Erin Osborne was caught and bowled without scoring by Holly Colvin.

Coyte made 16 but was run out soon after Cameron's vigil was ended by Brunt and although Jonassen hit an unbeaten 34 in as many balls at the end, England were not to be denied.

Another run out, this time from Brunt, saw off Megan Schutt and the game was won when Colvin had Holly Ferling caught by Gunn for three.

The Test match that opened the new-look series was drawn and Australia won the opening ODI at Lord's by 27 runs.

The third ODI, also at Hove, is on Sunday 25th August.

Sri Lanka Seal Series Thanks To Spinners

Scorecard

Sri Lanka eased to an eight-wicket victory over South Africa in the fourth One-Day International in Pallekele and so secured the series win with a match still to play.

Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara added 184 for the second-wicket as the home side cruised to their target of 239 in the 44th over. Dilshan notched up the 17th century of his ODI career off 119 balls, while Sangakkara departed shortly before the end for 91.

Robin Peterson was again a bit of a disappointment with the ball for the Proteas on a slow pitch in Pallekele. He returned figures of none for 46 from eight overs and was out-bowled by off-spinner JP Duminy (10-0-34-0). The seam-bowlers were arguably the most effective part of the bowling attack, with Rory Kleinveldt, playing in place of the injured Ryan McLaren, particularly parsimonious and conceding just 33 runs from eight overs.

Hashim Amla had earlier marked his return from a groin injury by hitting a fluent 77 off 71 balls and adding 101 with Duminy for the second-wicket. South Africa lost Quinton de Kock early to Lasith Malinga (3-52) after winning the toss, but Duminy and Amla gave them the upper hand during their stand which spanned just 115 balls.

However, Sri Lanka’s spinners made the going difficult and the visitors lost three wickets for one run two thirds of the way through their innings. Amla had been trapped leg-before by Dilshan, with AB de Villiers then falling to the same bowler, before a brief partnership between Duminy and Faf du Plessis.

Du Plessis, though, was removed by Rangana Herath to trigger the pivotal collapse. Ajantha Mendis then dispensed with David Miller and Farhaan Behardien on the way to figures of four for 51, while Malinga polished off the tail as South Africa were all out for 238.

Pakistan Wrap Up T20 Series

Umar Akmal drives during his important knock of 46.

Pakistan 135-7 (Akmal 46no) beat
West Indies 124-9 (Tanvir 2-20) by 11 runs
Second Twenty20 International, St Vincent
Scorecard

Pakistan completed a series victory over the West Indies with a comfortable win in the second T20 International in St Vincent. The result means that they move up to second in the ICC T20 Rankings behind Sri Lanka, while world champions West Indies slip below India into fourth.

The home side never recovered from an appalling start to their run chase after restricting Pakistan to 135 for seven after they had elected to bat. They hit just one boundary in their first nine overs and found themselves 17 for four after eight as they struggled to get the Pakistani spinners off the square. Mohammad Hafeez delivered four overs of off-spin at a cost of only nine runs and picked up the wicket of Chris Gayle. Sohail Tanvir also bowled well, maintaining a wicket-to-wicket line with his left-arm medium-pace.

Dwayne Bravo and the surprisingly promoted Sunil Narine just about got the West Indies back into the match with a fifth-wicket stand of 47. Narine benefited from a couple of useful edges and clubbed a six over mid-wicket to make 28 off 16 balls, while Bravo favoured his usual area of wide long-off.

Kieron Pollard then came in following Narine’s departure to Saeed Ajmal (2-21) and clubbed 23 off 10 balls. However, he and Bravo fell in successive deliveries at the end of the 17th over and the game was as good as over. Zulfiqar Babar picked up both of them and ended with two for 37.

After that, it was just a case of the hosts minimising their margin of defeat and Tino Best helped their cause by hitting a brace of sixes as they ended on 124 for nine.

Pakistan had earlier found scoring difficult more or less from the outset in their innings. Ahmed Shehzad made 44 but it took 46 balls as Samuel Badree proved almost impossible to get away, returning figures of two for 16 from his four overs of leg-spin. Narine was also his usual threatening self and contributed three for 26 to the cause. Umar Akmal was the only batsman apparently able to cope and kept his side alive with a knock of 46 not out off 36 balls.

Pakistan will be pleased with their mini-tour of the Caribbean, having now added a 2-0 clean-sweep of the T20s to a 3-2 win in the ODI series.

Dhawan Drives India To 2-0 Series LeadShikhar Dhawan hit a century as India posted a 58-run win over Zimbabwe in the second ODI

India 294-8 (Dhawan 116, Karthik 69) beat
Zimbabwe 236-9 (Unadkat 4-41) by 58 runs
Second One-Day International, Harare
Scorecard

Shikhar Dhawan scored his third One-Day International century to set up a convincing 58-run win for India over Zimbabwe in the second match in Harare.

India's eventual victory, which puts them 2-0 up in the five-match series, was not without alarm, as they slipped to 65 for four when batting first only for Dhawan (116) and Dinesh Karthik (65) to revive the innings, which they closed on 294 for eight.

Although Zimbabwe made a good start, they lost ground quickly and closed on 236 for nine despite an 88-run stand for the seventh wicket between Elton Chigumbura (46) and Prosper Utseya (52 not out).

The key part of the game was the period between the fall of Zimbabwe's second wicket - at 109 in the 21st over, and the 31st over, by which time they had lost four more wickets and added just 24 runs as India pulled out the ultimate double whammy - a stack of wickets resulting in a dramatic increase to the required run-rate.

Although Chigumbura hit four fours and a six and Utseya hit five fours, their efforts were little more than damage limitation and at least prevented the Zimbabweans from being bowled out inside 50 overs.

Earlier in the day, things were looking rosy for the men in red, as Brian Vitori (2-27), Kyle Jarvis (1-70) and Tendai Chatara (1-46) made short work of Rohit Sharma (1), Virat Kohli (14), Ambati Rayudu (5) and Suresh Raina (4) to put India under pressure.

Through Dhawan and Karthik, they responded magnificently. Dhawan reached his century in 115 balls while Karthik made a well-paced 69 in 74 balls with six fours.

Dhawan struck 11 fours and two sixes and the pair put on 167 for the fifth wicket and after their dismissals, further runs came courtesy of Ravindra Jadeja (15) and Ranganath Vinay Kumar, who thumped 27 not out in 12 balls to keep India in the driving seat.

Sikandar Raza impessed in the opening game by hitting 82 but was the first batsman to fall on this occasion, making 20 before he was caught by man-of-the-moment Dhawan for 20 although Vusi Sibanda's 55 and 34 in 47 balls from Hamilton Masakadza kept Zimbabwe in the game.

Then India took control during a 10-over period that swung the game. First, Brendan Taylor was run out without scoring by Jaydev Unadkat four balls after Sibanda was caught by Amit Mishra off the same bowler.

Sean Williams was trapped in front by Jadeja for five and Malcolm Waller leg before to Mishra for two either side of Masakadza being caught by Shami Ahmed off leg-spinner Mishra.

After that, Chigumbura and Utseya showed defiance aplenty but the game was gone - not that Unadkat had stopped giving his all, as he bowled Jarvis (2) and Vitori (0) to end with figures of four for 41.

Utseya was left unbeaten at the other end on 52 in 62 balls.

The third match is on 28th July.

India Romp To Series Win

India 187-3 (Kohli 68no, Chatara 1-34) beat
Zimbabwe 183 (Mishra 4-47) by seven wickets
Third One-Day International, Harare
Scorecard

World champions India wrapped up the Celkon Mobiles One-Day International series with two games in hand after cruising to a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in Harare.
India now lead the five-match series 3-0 as the tour heads to Bulawayo for the remainder of the games starting this Thursday.

Again Virat Kohli (68 not out) played a true captain’s role as he stirred India to 187 for three in 35.3 overs overs; easily surpassing Zimbabwe’s 183 squeezed from 46 overs.

Another toss win for India and bowling election, second in the series, was cancerous for Zimbabwean batsmen who failed to adapt to the severely swinging conditions in the morning.

As it may, it turned out to be a real test as India’s Vinay Kumar (1-32) got the breakthrough with the third ball of match when he had Vusi Sibanda, who looked to attack but miscued and skied his efforts to a running Shikhar Dhawan, out for a duck.

It even got better for the Men in Blue in the next over as Sikandar Raza Butt (1) edged Mohammed Shami (2-25) behind to wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik to leave Zimbabwe reeling at two for two.

Hamilton Masakadza (38) and skipper Brendan Taylor (23) came to the middle probably earlier than they would have liked and re-commenced the innings with a 65-run stand for the third wicket.

The duo looked good to set the platform but Taylor was sharply caught by Shami off Jaydev Unadkat (1-24) in a dismissal that needed TV umpire Owen Chirombe to decide although most fans thought the ball had touched the ground.

It never rained but poured for the hosts and this time spinner Amit Mishra removed Masakadza and Malcolm Waller for a golden duck in successive deliveries; putting Zimbabwe in a spot of bother of 80 for five in 19.5 overs.

Zimbabwe never showed signs of recovery and they were further plunged into crisis as Elton Chigumbura (3) was trapped lbw by Ravindra Jadeja (1-39) while Prosper Utseya (10) was caught behind by Karthik off Shami.

A brief resistance by Sean Williams (45) gave Zimbabwe a bit of light in the dark tunnel but this wasn’t long before he was run out by a combination of Jadeja and Karthik with the scoreboard reading 133 for eight in 34.3 overs.

Tail-enders Tendai Chatara (23) and Brian Vitori (17) patiently took Zimbabwe past the 150-run mark and tried to resuscitate the innings with 34 runs for the ninth-wicket partnership in a case where both players notched up their career bests.

It took Chatara seven games to get his first international run.

Nevertheless, Vitori succumbed to Mishra as he edged him to provide Karthik his fourth catch of the match thus bringing in debutant Mike Chinouya (6 not out) to the crease.

However, both Chatara’s cameo and Zimbabwe’s innings finally came to a halt in the 46th over when man of the match Mishra (4-47), the pick of the Indian bowlers, knocked his off stump with a googly thus completing his four-wicket haul.

India were simply sensational in their run chase for a meager total. Even the aggression from the Zimbabwean bowlers in the power-play couldn’t do much to peg the World Champions.

Chinouya had his first international wicket when he forced Rohit Sharma (14) to edge to wicketkeeper Taylor in sixth over before Chatara had dangerman Dhawan (35) brilliantly caught by Sibanda.

From 67 for two, a 64-run third-wicket stand between Kohli and Ambati Rayudu ensued and brought India closer to reaching their destination.

India lost Rayudu (33), caught and bowled by Vitori, with 52 runs to win thus bringing in Suresh Raina (28 not out) who stood by his skipper until victory was attained with 87 more balls remaining.

Pakistan Claim ODI Series Win

Pakistan 243-6 (Ahmed Shehzad 64) beat
West Indies 242-7 by four wickets
Fifth One-Day International, Saint Lucia
Scorecard

Pakistan won the fifth and final One-Day International against the West Indies by four wickets with two balls remaining to take a 3-1 series victory.

In another closely-fought match, Pakistan reached 243 for six in the final over after the home side had posted 242 for seven.

A late blast of 48 in 27 balls from West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo was the best the hosts could muster before half-centuries from Misbah-ul-Haq (63) and Ahmed Shehzad (64) set Pakistan on course for the win.

However, the late dismissals of Misbah and Umar Akmal (37) threatened to undermine their chase until Shahid Afridi, unbeaten on 13, and Saeed Ajmal, on one, saw them home.

Pakistan elected to field first and Junaid Khan (3-48) struck quickly to remove Devon Smith (7) and Darren Bravo (9) before Johnson Charles' 43 and Marlon Samuels' 45 helped launch the recovery.

It was slow going, however, Charles occupying the crease for 71 deliveries and Samuels taking 89 balls. Mohammad Irfan removed both and West Indies launched the charge through Chris Gayle (21), Lendl Simmons (25) and Bravo, who hit five fours and three sixes.

Darren Sammy smacked 29 not out in 18 balls as Ajmal also returned two wickets by removing Simmons and Bravo.

Pakistan openers Nasir Jamshed, who made 23, and Shehzad, whose 64 came from 100 balls, then put on 51 together before Jamshed was run out by Gayle and Mohammad Hafeez's poor series ended when he was caught by Simmons off Sammy for 11 in 22 balls.

Misbah and Shehzad then put on 69 for the third wicket to take the score to 123, when Shehzad dismissed by Tino Best.

Haris Sohail made a fluent 17 in 22 balls but when he departed, caught by Simmons as Best struck again to return three for 48, the match - like most in the series - could have gone either way.

Misbah then formed a crucial partnership with Akmal which turned the game in Pakistan's favour. The former stroked 63 in 93 deliveries while Akmal hurried to 37 in 28, exiting in the 48th over when he skied an attempted pull off Best and was caught by Kemar Roach.

That left Misbah with the job of shepherding Pakistan to the finish line but he couldn't quite stay to finish off the job, caught by captain Bravo off Jason Holder with the scores level, leaving Afridi and Ajmal to complete the formalities in the final over.

Pattinson ruled out of Ashes series

Wednesday, 24 July 2013

Australia fast bowler James Pattinson will miss the rest of the Ashes series against England after suffering a stress fracture of the lower back.

The 23-year-old complained of soreness in his hip and back at the end of the second Test at Lord's.

First Test, Trent Bridge: 3/69, 2; 2/101, 25 not out Second Test, Lord's: 1/95, 10 not out; 1/42, 35 "Unfortunately he will not take any further part in this Test series," said Australia team doctor Peter Brukner.

The tourists say they have no immediate plans to call up a replacement, which could mean a recall for Mitchell Starc.

Starc was left out of the side which was thrashed by 347 runs on Sunday as England established a 2-0 series lead ahead of the third Test at Old Trafford starting on 1 August.

The right-arm paceman, who took 5-135 in the first Test at Trent Bridge, only recently returned to fitness after undergoing ankle surgery.

Pattinson took seven wickets in the first two Tests at a cost of 307 runs, and almost helped Australia pull off an unlikely Trent Bridge victory with a gritty 25 not out in a thrilling climax to the first Test.

But this is the latest setback in a career blighted by injuries, with the Victoria cricketer breaking down four times in 2012 alone.

Two other potential replacements, Jackson Bird and Pat Cummins, have endured serious back problems of their own in recent times.

Cummins, a highly-rated 20-year-old quick, took 4-43 for Australia A against Zimbabwe in Harare last week.

James Faulkner is also available as back-up to frontline seamers Peter Siddle and Ryan Harris, while Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Chadd Sayers could be called up from the Australia A squad.

"Scans have identified an early stage low back stress fracture," Prukner said of Pattinson. "He will commence a rehabilitation programme with the aim to have him back for the Australian summer."

Cricket Australia general manager Pat Howard added: "While we are obviously disappointed for James, the selectors have five bowlers fit and ready to perform in England, providing them with many options.

"It is also important to note that several players have been performing for Australia A and are available to be called up at any stage if the national selection panel requires them."
